LET US TELL YOU A LITTLE STORY… About a young Larry White who, as soon as he could walk and talk, was put to work bussing tables in his grandmother’s soul food restaurant, Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Café. The food, the people, the atmosphere…it was contagious, and it wasn’t long before Larry would start experimenting with his own recipes.
Over the next 10 years, Larry (“Lo-Lo” by that point) would tirelessly perfect his now famous fried chicken and homemade waffle recipes. In 2002, the first 1,000 sq. ft. restaurant opened and started to gain traction in the community. Turns out, it would also garner the attention-turned-devotion of folks like Charles Barkley, Shaq, Muhammad Ali and more, turning Phoenix, AZ into an unlikely destination for authentic soul food.
Eventually, that small restaurant would give way to a downtown Phoenix location, then Scottsdale, and Gilbert, then the PHX airport…and before long, Lo-Lo’s would start popping up in lucky locales across the country. Not bad for a guy who used to greet guests, run back to cook the food, and then don the chicken outfit and distribute flyers out front. The same chicken, waffles and soul food favorites that you enjoy today inside every Lo-Lo’s location are the authentic, untouched recipes that Larry created in the back of his grandmother’s restaurant all those years ago.
